Hello! I know you don't know me, but we've got something in common. I got your blog address off the Stirrup Queen's blogroll and was wondering if you wouldn't mind helping me help a couple who is trying to add a little one to their family. We're holding a silent auction for them this weekend (Friday and Saturday) on goteamwitt.blogspot.com and need help getting the word out! I have problem skin (it gets very dry, but most brands just make it greasy without dealing with the dryness) and have started using an own brand(!). We have here in the UK a chain of pharmacies called Boots, and they do a really really gentle own brand which is good. Only taken me about 7 years or so to find it, so I know what you mean. I'm going to check the link you gave and see if they're available in the UK though.

You do have a warping board...it's anything that you can warp yarn around! Turn a chair upside down and use the legs as "pegs"...protrude pegs (pencils, pens, dowels, kitchen spatulas..anything stick-like) between books on a book shelf...the stems of quick grip or C clams...just about anything. :)

My husband tells some stories about weird shifts when out to sea, too. He'd agree with you about twelve-and-twelve, and shares your hatred of six-and-six for the very same reason. Being the Navy, they also do twenty-four-and-twenty-four, which he says actually works well, so they can get lengthy repairs done and have some free time that isn't spent sleeping.

I wonder what your crew would say if you suggested 24/24? :)

I've done the plying ball, and found as a beginning spindler, it worked really well. That said, I'm gonna try doing cops onto straws this next time and see. I can see the big issue with spindling is the plying, not the spinning part. Will have to ponder this more...

Exactly! It makes plying so much faster, you've probably "bought back" all the time spent winding the ball. And besides, you get to touch the lovely fiber one more time as you wind the ball :)

Just think how much easier 3-ply will be, now, too!

Louiz, yes they are well worth trying. I had tried the toilet roll tube technique and was still having terrible problems when plying with snarls. When you make the plying ball everything is slow and smooth, then when you ply it goes SUPER fast with no snarls at all. Although it's an extra step (why I avoided it for so long) I think plying goes faster, and it was way less stressful. Even when plying from each end of one ball, I'd considered winding into a plying ball first since I've had awful snarls when trying that in the past.

So they're worth trying then? I keep meaning to but forgetting (at the moment I'm spinning either 2ply, from each end of the ball or stuff that I'm still not sure what to do with it so it's just sitting on dozens of toilet roll tubes).
